About Tegucigalpa

Tegucigalpa is the capital of Honduras, and therefore the most important and most densely-populated city in the country. It is the economic and cultural motor of Honduras and the headquarters of the government of the Republic. It is a city with strong industrial development but indigenous origins. Its culture is rooted in a multitude of ancestral cultures and ethnic groups that have left an indelible mark on the country. Tegucigalpa means “Hill of Silver”, as this place was a source of gold and silver during its creation in the 16th century as a Spanish colony. Since then the mines have stopped producing precious metals, while industry has taken over a large part of the city, and the primary sector remains important in the capital and country as a whole.
Tegucigalpa enjoys a pleasant climate throughout the year, and although it is not predominantly a tourist destination, its mild temperatures and friendly people ensure that a visit to this country is remembered with pleasure.
What tourism there is mainly in the form of visits to the historic center of the capital due to its strong colonial influence: the National Museum of Villaroy, the Museum of Man and the Cathedral. But tourism extends beyond the borders of Tegucigalpa, and he who would allow himself to be seduced by the country should not miss its 15 national parks, its archaeological sites of Maya Copán near the Guatemalan border, its beaches of turquoise blue water, the colonial cities of Trujillo, Omoa and Gracias, or taking part in the country’s culture, its living indigenous roots and cultural diversity; for example the Garífuna culture of African origin.
